Explanation

The Aburi Accord or Aburi Declaration is a decision that was reached at a meeting between 4-5 January 1967 in Aburi, Ghana, attended by delegates of both the Federal Government of Nigeria (the Supreme Military Council) and Eastern delegates led by the Eastern Region's leader Colonel Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu. The meeting was had as the last chance to prevent an all-out war between the Federal Government and the Eastern Region. The council collectively vowed not to use force to settle the Nigerian crisis. In response, Decree No. 8 was promulgated. However, this decree did not hold as the accord finally broke down because of differences in interpretation of the decree on both sides. This led to the outbreak of the Nigerian Civil War (1967-70).
