Okoro Uchechukwu Solomon, a student from Calvary Arrows College in Benue, Nigeria, achieved an impressive score of 337 in the 2024 JAMB exam. In this interview, Uche shares the strategies that helped him reach such a remarkable score, the role his school played in his preparation, and his future academic aspirations.
The Role of Calvary Arrows College in Uche’s Success
Calvary Arrows College played a central role in preparing Uche for JAMB. From the start, the school took a proactive approach by preparing its students months in advance. Uche’s school provided a rigorous academic environment, focusing on regular testing and ensuring that students were comfortable with the Computer-Based Testing (CBT) format of the JAMB exam.
"We started preparing for JAMB months before the exam," Uche explains. "Each month, we would practice with the CBT app, which made a huge difference in my confidence and performance."
The Journey: From 202 to 337
Uche’s journey to scoring 337 was not without its challenges. His first attempt at JAMB CBT practice yielded a score of 202—a far cry from the 300+ scores he would later achieve. The time constraints and unfamiliarity with the CBT format made the first attempt difficult.
"In my first JAMB CBT practice, I got 202 because I wasn’t used to the timing and how the system worked," Uche recalls. "I found it hard to manage my time and focus on the questions."
However, Uche didn’t let this early setback define his journey. With each passing month, his school continued to administer practice sessions using the CBT app, allowing Uche to gradually improve his speed, accuracy, and overall exam-taking skills. After a few months of consistent practice, Uche’s score jumped to 291.
"After the first practice, I started scoring around 291," Uche says. "But despite my improvements, I never really entered the 300+ range in practice."
It wasn’t until the actual JAMB exam that Uche’s hard work paid off, and he surpassed the 300-point threshold, scoring an impressive 337.
The Importance of Consistency and Preparation
Uche’s story highlights the importance of consistent practice and preparation. The structured approach taken by his school—monthly CBT app sessions, continuous revision, and regular assessments—allowed him to build the necessary skills to perform well under pressure
"Consistency is key," Uche emphasizes. "By practicing regularly, I became more comfortable with the CBT format and learned how to manage my time during the exam."
In addition to his school’s role, Uche credits his personal study routine and dedication to improving his weaknesses for his success. He focused heavily on subjects where he felt less confident and sought extra practice in those areas
Balancing Expectations and Future Aspirations
Despite his impressive achievements, Uche remains grounded and focused on his long-term goals. In the next five years, he plans to have completed his undergraduate degree and started working towards his master’s and PhD
"In five years, I plan to finish school and start my master's degree," Uche shares. "My goal is to complete a PhD eventually."
For Uche, education is not just a means to an end—it is a lifelong journey of learning and growth. His ambitions reflect his desire to continue excelling academically and make a meaningful contribution to his field of study
Advice to JAMB Aspirants
Uche’s journey offers valuable lessons for future JAMB candidates. His advice? Start early, be consistent, and don’t get discouraged by initial setbacks
"My biggest advice is to start preparing early and practice consistently," he says. "The more you practice, the more confident you become, especially with the CBT format. Don’t let a low score at first discourage you—keep pushing and improving."
He also emphasizes the importance of time management, especially during the exam. Practicing with the CBT app helped him learn how to allocate his time effectively, which was crucial to his success in the actual exam.
"Time management is everything in JAMB," Uche explains. "The more familiar you are with the system, the better you’ll manage your time."
Support Systems: School, Family, and Personal Determination
Beyond his school’s efforts, Uche attributes much of his success to his family's support and his determination to excel. His family provided the encouragement and stability he needed during the intense preparation period
"My family was very supportive," Uche says. "They understood the importance of this exam and helped me stay focused on my goals."
His own determination and work ethic were also critical to his success. Uche remained disciplined throughout his preparation, setting aside time each day for revision and practice
Uche’s story is a testament to the power of consistent practice, school support, and self-determination. His journey from scoring 202 in his first CBT practice to achieving 337 in JAMB highlights the importance of preparation, resilience, and time management. As Uche looks forward to his future academic pursuits, his story serves as an inspiration to other students aiming to achieve high scores in JAMB
